Editorial Policy

How we research, write, source, illustrate, publish and correct stories on History All Day.

Last updated: October 20, 2026

History All Day publishes stories about the events, people, places and ideas that shaped the world we live in. This policy sets out the standards our writers and editors follow when researching, writing, illustrating, publishing and correcting stories. Questions about it may be sent to [email protected].

1. Our mission

We exist to make history vivid, accurate and relevant: to tell the story well, to get the facts right, and to show how the past connects to the present. We write for curious general readers, not specialists, but we hold ourselves to the standard that a specialist reading our work should find it fair and sound.

2. Accuracy and sourcing

  • Stories are researched from published histories, peer-reviewed scholarship, archives, museum and library collections, official records, reputable reference works and established news organisations, and from primary documents where available.
  • We prefer primary and scholarly sources over secondary popular accounts, and we cross-check key facts (names, dates, numbers and quotations) against more than one reliable source where possible.
  • Where sources disagree, where an account rests on a single source, or where a popular story is legendary or disputed, we say so in the text rather than present it as settled fact.
  • We do not invent quotations, statistics, dialogue or details. Quotations are attributed to their source, and reconstructed or paraphrased speech is identified as such.
  • We distinguish clearly between established fact, scholarly interpretation and our own analysis or opinion.

3. Fairness and sensitivity

  • We aim to treat people, communities, nations and cultures fairly, including those whose histories have been marginalised or told mainly by others.
  • We avoid sensationalism. We cover difficult subjects such as war, genocide, slavery, disease and disaster with care and context, and we do not publish stories whose main purpose is to exploit suffering.
  • We do not publish material about living private individuals without a clear public interest.
  • Historical language and attitudes that are offensive today may be quoted where necessary to document the past accurately, with context.

4. Images

  • We use images that are in the public domain, openly licensed (such as CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA), licensed to us, or used as permitted by law, with credit and source recorded for each image.
  • Historical images are not altered in ways that change their meaning. We may crop, resize, straighten or adjust exposure for display. Colourised or reconstructed images are labelled.
  • Captions identify the subject, date and place where known; where an identification is uncertain, we say so.
  • Rights holders can request a credit correction or removal under our Copyright Policy at [email protected].

5. Headlines and social media

Headlines and social posts must accurately reflect the story. We write to attract readers, but we do not use misleading headlines, false urgency or claims the story does not support.

6. Bylines and pen names

Stories are published under the bylines of our editors, some of whom write under pen names, a long-standing practice in publishing. Each editor covers a defined beat. Regardless of byline, every story is published under the responsibility of the publisher, Cupcakes Holdings LTD.

7. Use of technology and AI tools

Our writers and editors may use software tools, including AI-assisted tools, for research assistance, drafting, translation, summarisation, image search and copy-editing. We do not allow these tools to be the final authority on any fact. Every story is reviewed against our sourcing standards before publication, and the publisher remains fully responsible for what we publish.

8. Independence from advertising

History All Day is funded by advertising and, from time to time, affiliate partnerships. These relationships never influence what we choose to cover or what we say. Advertisers do not review or approve editorial content. Sponsored content, if we ever publish it, will be clearly labelled as such, and affiliate links are disclosed in line with our Disclaimer.

9. Conflicts of interest

Writers and editors must disclose to the publisher any personal, financial or family interest that could reasonably be seen to affect their coverage, and may be reassigned from a story where a conflict exists.

10. Corrections and updates

  • We correct factual errors as soon as we confirm them.
  • Minor corrections, such as spelling, typographical errors or broken links, are made without a note.
  • Material corrections, those that change a fact, date, name, figure or the meaning of a passage, are noted at the end of the story with the date of the correction.
  • Where new research substantially changes the understanding of a story, we may update it and note the update.
  • We do not remove stories to hide errors; we correct them. Removal is reserved for legal, privacy, safety or rights reasons.

To request a correction, email [email protected] with the subject line "Correction", the story URL and, where possible, a supporting source.

11. Complaints

If you are unhappy with a story or with our response to a correction request, email [email protected] with the subject line "Editorial complaint". A senior editor not involved in the original story will review it and reply.

12. Reader contributions

We welcome story ideas, family histories and tips. We verify any information we receive before publishing it, and we do not publish a reader's personal story or identity without their permission.

13. Review of this policy

We review this policy regularly. The "Last updated" date above shows the current version.
