These Terrible Supervisors Prove Why Not Everyone Is Cut Out For Leadership Roles

Published: Aug 06, 2023

Being a manager is hard work. It takes the right mixture of patience and firmness to be effective. Naturally, problem-solving skills are essential to any managerial position, and thinking outside of the box can be useful when getting your employees out of a difficult situation.

Some managers are pleasant, helpful, and compassionate, while others are the exact opposite. We’re sorry if this article brings up any PTSD from your prior experiences with managers.

These Are Some Intense Demands

For some people, going to work is an exciting thing to look forward to every day. You may even bounce out of bed with a smile on your face. But, there are also certain workplace things that can make any employee want to consider quitting.

We’re sure that managers want to stay in their pajamas just as much as employees do. Managers are supposed to be the responsible ones, but this poster went a bit too far. Would you mind working late? Or deny that you need a raise because the review was enough?

I Can’t Stop Looking Into Your (Googly) Eyes

Having some good laughs here and there is important in any office setting. Even though it can sometimes be an annoyance or distraction, it’s nice to lighten up the mood, especially when you have a grumpy manager.

That being said, the office’s clown should remain anonymous probably, or else they will get caught. Googly eyes do seem a bit childish, but we can see how this scenario would bring lots of laughter and good energy into the office.

Choose Your Font Wisely…Or Else

It’s important to be cautious about the type of tone you use when putting signs or notes around the office. You shouldn’t come off as passive-aggressive or even sarcastic since that kind of attitude doesn’t do well in an office setting.

The most important thing, however, is to always use the appropriate and correct font. When you work at a Fortune 500 company, choosing a font such as Comic Sans is the wrong move. It’s clear that the Comic Sans font is a touchy subject at that company. But, dissing a lemonade stand is pretty harsh.

That’s Going Directly Into My Savings Account

Coming up with a month’s rent is a struggle for many people and can lead to lots of stress. Making ends meet after the harsh times of the last few years (more so if you were let go), can be too much to shoulder. When you come across somebody who is going out of their way to help you, it’s the best feeling.

We’re sure that this gesture helped the people who needed it, but it isn’t going to make a big difference in the end. While the sentiment and good intention are there, the execution fell flat.

I Need A Phone Break

With everybody glued to phones nowadays, it can be hard to get them to detach from their magnetic powers. Checking your phones every few minutes seems normal, whether you’re in the workplace or a coffee shop. That being said, there’s an appropriate amount of time that you should be on your phone at work since you’re there to actually be working.

Source: Reddit

This manager’s posted reaction to phone use in the office is a tad harsh. Every 30 minutes that an employee checks their phone, they’ll lose their pay. Not to mention, this is a legitimate threat from the management.

A Small Yet Insignificant Token Of Our Appreciation

All employees need recognition – it makes them feel satisfied and appreciated. Feeling like you are being seen is a big win. When the recognition comes from the management, you should feel extra proud of yourself.

Source: Reddit

This is some bonus, isn’t it? Each worker will probably be eating that one banana during their shifts. Yes, bananas are really good, but this token of appreciation seems a bit too underwhelming. Is now a good time to say, “Thanks, I guess?”

Banning Flavor From Someone’s Life

Renting an apartment can be stressful, especially when dealing with new landlords who have no idea what they’re doing. The clauses that they put into contracts are beyond ridiculous and they do it because they can. Of course, maintaining an entire property is exhausting, but new tenants have the right to feel trusted and welcomed into their new homes.

Source: Reddit

Saying that your tenants can’t cook with spices or oils seems way out of bounds. So, what’s the worst that could possibly happen when cooking with spices and oils? Making just about the best and tastiest meal ever. We think the manager needs to adjust their wording and expectations quite a bit!

Simon Says Jump

When you work in a shared building, many of the amenities are communal. More often than not, these things make people’s lives easier. Although, when those things cease to work for some reason, it can feel like the biggest ask in the world to get management to fix them.

Source: Reddit

It’s already scary enough that the elevator has issues moving in the first place. When you’re taking it, you have to be worried about it stopping or breaking down mid-ride. It’s the management’s job to fix the issue, specifically if it happens frequently. They should care about their workers’ safety before anything else. Clearly, that’s not the case.

No Soup For You

Showing your appreciation to people who clean and take care of the workplace should be vital. Custodians are often underappreciated and not recognized enough for all that they do. We all know how much a little token of appreciation can go, even more so if it’s from your superiors.

Source: Reddit

The person that composed this note clearly has never had to clean in their entire life. As the backbone of many workplaces, custodians deserve all the recognition in the world. This sign is not funny, but just plain rude and inconsiderate.

Beware Of The Cookie Monster

Being treated to something small in the workplace can feel pretty good. Working in an office environment where employees feel valued is one of the most important elements in the relationship between an employee and their manager. However, when the gesture comes with strings attached (such as, what not to do) you may feel even worse after the fact.

Source: Reddit

The management gave their employees strict guidelines in writing with a red marker telling them what cookies they can eat. How could anybody purposefully take the fun out of eating cookies?

It’s Not My Problem So Figure It Out

All human beings deserve compassion and it’s important to keep that in mind when you see somebody in need. Not everybody can afford the right clothing for all the different types of weather. Many of those who are less fortunate than others don’t have any means of keeping themselves warm, but that shouldn’t be their fault.

Source: Reddit

Seeing this sign made it crystal clear that not everybody feels like they need to share compassion. All we know is that whoever wrote this sign deserved what was coming to them. It’s called karma, folks.

Do You Even Lift, Bro?

Not everybody likes the experience of going to the gym. It can be daunting and embarrassing, especially if you’re a newbie. It’s common that many people don’t ask for help because they don’t want to bother anyone.

Source: Reddit

Apparently, at this gym, the management is purposefully shaking things up by taking shots at their customers’ ability to lift weights. They are implying that these people are weaker than women, which implies that women must be weak. Contrary to popular belief, there are many women out there who are physically strong.

Scheming Landlords

We are all aware that some landlords try to trick their tenants by pulling off sneaky schemes. There are loopholes around certain rules and they can evict you without any legal notice. Being without a place to live is an extremely scary thought.

Source: Reddit

With this scenario, it definitely takes two to tango, but when you bring the Bible into the situation, you should be truthful. The landlord named Bruce probably had no idea that his tenant would be so knowledgeable in not only rental law, but the Bible, as well. We hope he was scared straight after this conversation!

You Need To Show Up To Work, We’re Begging You

We’ve all probably shown up to work late once or twice, which is forgivable. However, when you show up late repeatedly the manager has no other option but to fire you. There are other ways of going about this instead of the one presented in the photo.

Source: Reddit

We all love some good workplace banter, but this one went too far. Abby must have not been coming to work for some time because this is really embarrassing. It’s also out of line for management to do something this bold, but, perhaps, it worked.

No, Thank You, Charles

Staying hydrated during long work days is an essential way to keep from feeling exhausted all the time. You need to remind yourself to drink water more often during the day. But, if you’re working for Charles, we hope that you brought your own water bottle.

Source: Reddit

For anybody who has had to work for this man, we’re formally apologizing. He leaves passive-aggressive notes and threatens to press charges against his employees for taking bottled water. Charles, you need to provide your employees with water instead of charging them for it.

A Designated Bathroom Sign

Public restrooms are gross. That’s just a plain fact. Sometimes you are better off just holding it and waiting until you get home. Most likely, we can all agree with that.

Source: Reddit

This request seems a bit strange at first, but it’s actually totally understandable. Management had enough and was forced to write a sign to address the issue. Regardless of whether you’re an employee or paying customer, there’s absolutely no standing for anybody in this bathroom. It’d be alarming if the manager is actually checking.

May The Germ Gods Be With You

There are certain things with workplace behavior that should be kept out of the mix. Religion and hygiene are one of them. We had never suspected that there would be such a powerful connection between religion and hygiene until we saw this photo. Maybe this is a place of worship instead of a workplace.

Source: Reddit

Getting people to be aware of their hygiene is beyond important, especially during these current times. The management is pushing their agenda a bit too much with this one.

Doctor’s (Unreasonable) Orders

When managers are in a workplace, it may slip their minds that everybody there is a person, and are not people who exist to purely serve them. Managers probably forget that their employees are real people with normal and basic needs. But, the needs of one employee might differ from another’s needs.

Source: Reddit

Water should be free and the manager should give any employee H2O even without a doctor’s note. It seems really wrong to only give your employees water under a set list of rules. We would understand if the employees quit on the spot.

Leave Your Phone Out Of The Bathroom

All of us have taken our phones to the bathroom more than once. It’s a habit. If you’re staying in the restroom longer than you need to, you probably have your phone in there with you.

Source: Reddit

Well, there’s actually a toilet specially designed to make the employees uncomfortable! This is a sneaky invention since you don’t know what’s actually the source of the discomfort after a few minutes. We’d say that installing this toilet to limit the time your employees take breaks is pretty harsh.

Your Time = Our Money

Seeing how some employers treat their employees is quite disturbing. Obviously, the rules differ at each workplace, but enforcing such strict rules makes the workplace feel rigid. Who would want to work at a place where they are in constant fear of being punished for doing something wrong?

Source: Reddit

This sign is the definition of a hostile work environment. As soon as you clock in for your day, management won’t hesitate to point out all of the moments when you’re not being productive. Talk about having zero trust!

Getting In Some Much-Needed Freezer Time

We’ve already pointed out how some workplaces can be hostile and asking your managers for anything seems scary. In particular, this manager understands what they’re employees are going through.

Source: Reddit

Treating employees with respect should be the priority at the top of a manager’s list. Crying at work has been a feeling all of us have experienced at some point or another. To be safe, having only one person in the freezer at a time seems responsible, and you don’t have to cry in front of your coworkers.

Liar, Liar Pants On Fire

There are moments in life when you have to indulge in a little white lie to get something done. Everybody told us that lying isn’t a good thing to do, but sometimes there are exceptions to the rule.

Source: Reddit

The fact that this person lied to their employer about a family member’s death isn’t a matter to handle lightly, but their employer’s response was horrendous. Employers often don’t see their employees as real people, but usually how much money they can make them. This response is very shocking.

Good Riddance!

When it comes to matters of the workplace, you can either feel comfortable with being honest or not. But, when you are actually sick and aren’t lying about it, you absolutely need to inform the employer.

Source: Reddit

This is really disturbing! What kind of employer forces their sick employees to come in? Obviously, the person got even sicker, and potentially ran the risk of getting others sick, too.

If that were us, we would also quit that awful place.

Rats In The Building

Imagine any restaurant full of rats, mice, or anything alive – it’s gross! Some places certainly have that issue, but owners should do everything they can to make sure their food is safe and free from any contamination.

Source: Reddit

These owners didn’t want to handle the problem the right way, so they just taped up the evidence and kept selling away. No wonder that person quit! Rat-infest Coke, anybody?

A Lack Of Sensitivity

Losing anybody that you love is an extremely hard thing to bear, especially when it’s a close family member. Often, healing from the loss takes people a very long time, but with the right support, the weight continually lessens.

Source: Reddit

Having to part ways with your own daughter is something that we can’t even begin to imagine. We’d only hope that this woman’s manager had enough heart to be kinder to her and more sensitive. How would the manager feel if they had lost their own daughter or someone close to them?

Dropping The Ball

Making the decision to have a baby is one of the biggest choices you will make in your lifetime. It takes mental, physical, and financial tolls on you. Truthfully, the due date of your baby should be the least of your worries.

Source: Reddit

Why would anybody’s boss comment on their employee’s due date or pregnancy? Apparently, that’s what some managers think it’s alright to do. So, why would anyone be “dropping the ball” by going into labor on their due date? We think that the manager has some issues.

Say That Again?

If you have ever encountered mean bosses before, you would know that having nice ones doesn’t come so easily. It should be a no-brainer that managers treat their employees with respect and kindness, but that isn’t always the case.

Source: Reddit

Say that again?! As long you don’t take advantage of your set work hours, it seems ok to ask for a change in your hours, or time off because of a religious holiday. Or, even religious reasons. We wonder if this woman quit her job after hearing that response.

Feminism Isn’t Funny

In terms of ideologies and beliefs, there are certain things that may make people laugh. It’s not ok to make fun of somebody for their religious inclinations or make rude comments about their beliefs.

Source: Reddit

We feel really bad for this person who got completely embarrassed in front of her coworkers. Her boss is extremely immature and shouldn’t even be a boss, to begin with! Defending yourself during a company meeting is absolutely unnecessary and uncalled for. Hopefully, that boss got taught a major lesson.

The Proof Is In The Pay Stubs

You’ve probably heard of employers trying to scam their employees out of their hard-earned money. So, when you’ve been working at one place for a long time, you would hope that you could trust your managers to never pull something like that.

Source: Reddit

This person’s father was one smart cookie and she was probably so happy that she listened to her father. Coming to the realization that your managers were stealing money from you and your employees must be a horrific and gut-wrenching feeling.
